Testimony 10
The war found me in Międzyrzec Podlaski.
Before 9th September the town had not been touched by aerial bombings.
The attitude of the local police toward the Jews changed considerably for the better.
On the 9th [of September] there were two bombings: a couple of times in the morning (but they missed the target), and about 4 p.m. in the vicinity (they set fire to villages on three sides of the town). It was said that a peasant was killed during the first attack, and that there were 7-8 civilian victims (killed or wounded) during the second, among them about three Jews.
By then Międzyrzec had already been flooded with refugees.
On the 9th, in spite of Shabbat, bakeries were working, and the authorities ordered to sell the bread only to the refugees, not to the local population.
The refugees continued to move on the road toward Biała Podlaska and Brest. Local inhabitants, afraid of bombings, had started to leave the town already on the 7th [of September].
On 7th, there was a terrible bombing in Siedlce (the local starosta [chief administrator] ordered the inhabitants to gather at a square – and the Germans descended with their airplanes and threw bombs on the crowd of civilians – a lot of victims). Therefore, on the 7th, to avoid a similar massacre, the starosta of Radzyń Podlaski ordered the population of Międzyrzec (apparently by phone) to leave the town and go to the surrounding forests. In the night from the 7th to the 8th the police and the OPL [Obrona Przeciwlotnicza, Anti-aircraft defence] woke the inhabitants and so they went to the forests. The town was nearly deserted by 3.30 a.m. On the 8th in the evening
On the 10th [of September], at 9 a.m., I left Międzyrzec in the company of six comrades (Victor Alter, Bernard Goldstein 1Note 1 : Well known Bund activists in prewar Poland. and four young men), intending to go to Warsaw and to participate in the defence of the city.
On the road the army did not let us 2Note 2 : In this part of the testimony, there are no personal pronouns and no auxiliary verbs (probably in order to save time), so it is not clear if it is the 1st person (singular or plural), or an impersonal form. to go to Warsaw. Therefore, we set out to Lublin – on foot, sometimes by a horse and wagon – and in this way we reached the city.
The peasants on the road were friendly. One of them even gave us a lift on his wagon to the next town for free.
We entered Lublin on the 10th, Monday in the morning, after the city had already been severely bombed. A lot of ruins.
In Lublin special Jewish workers’ groups were created (the Polish militia did not accepted any Jews) in order to clean up the ruins, help to extinguish fires and so on. They 3Note 3 : In this part of the testimony, there are no personal pronouns and no auxiliary verbs (probably in order to save time), so it is not clear if it is the 1st person (singular or plural), or an impersonal form. worked hard.
On the 14th a single issue of the newspaper Lubliner shtime [The Voice of Lublin], the organ of the central committee of the Bund, was published.
Victor Alter stayed in Lublin. He was appointed the Jewish press-officer by the city council and a member of its propaganda department.
On the 14th I [set out] on foot toward Chełm with two comrades.
Before we reached Chełm (on the 15th), about 12 German airplanes bombed the road full of civilian refugees, evacuated policemen and military troops. They started to shoot when the troops had already passed, and aimed at civilians.
On the road to Chełm we entered Piaski (on the 14th). In the town, perhaps two Jewish families remained. The others had
Chełm was crowded with soldiers. The town was constantly bombed. A lot of ruins. I myself saw a military hospital being destroyed.
In Chełm I went to the PKU [Powiatowa Komenda Uzupełnień, District Recruiting Command], as I wanted to join the army. They told me to go to Kovel. So I went to Kovel.
